архи: Because I'm bored and for various reasons do not have a hot Japanese girlfriend to spend my weekend with, I've just taken it upon myself to correct the Wikipedia article about The Cooper Temple Clause. I re-wrote the paragraph about the band's name to read as follows: The quintet's name is an obscure reference to a 19th century British Parliamentary law amendment, known as the "Cowper-Temple clause" ("Cowper" pronounced as "Cooper"), after its author, English politician William Francis Cowper-Temple. This amendment, introduced into the second reading of the Education Bill of 1870, decreed that no catechism nor denominational teaching of any kind should be included in the religious instruction given in rate-aided schools. While, in interviews, the band has provided a wealth of conflicting, and at times absurd, explanations for the name, this has to date been the only explanation making mention of a source that is verifiably true. Now, I can't remember which member of the band said this originally, or where I read it - but as far as I'm concerned, this is the only credible story behind the name. "The Cowper-Temple clause" does really exist as an amendment in 19th century English law books, and the name "Cowper" is phonetically pronounced as "Cooper". If you're about to pipe up and say: "But the band told me that it came from Ben's name for his genetically modified pet monkey who lived in a Temple and dressed up as Santa Clause", please bear in mind that the band have given scores of completely made-up reasons for the name. I've heard things about street gangs, travelling circuses, that it was just a random string of words... But let's be honest, there is no way that by sheer co-incidence there is an old English law with (when spoken) an IDENTICAL name. As far as I'm concerned this should be treated as the real explanation on the matter, if anyone asks. For most of us this question was put to bed ages ago, but I'm dredging it up again, partly so we have a handy thread to link back to if the question comes up again, and mainly because I have nothing better to do, like having sex with the hot Japanese girlfriend I don't have. сцылька
